West Manjimup Premium Avocados
West Manjimup Premium Avocados are a family owned and run company, headed up by Jamie Nicolaou, Tegan Studsor and their daughter Evie, and Jamie's parents George and Kathy.
Considering themselves small producers, managing 6.5 hectares of trees, they have been growing avocados in the idyllic Southern Forests region since 2001. With the popularity of the "Paddock to Plate" movement, Jamie decided that what better way to meet his customers whilst supplying them with a quality product, straight out of the orchard. With minimal handling and very little food miles, he has become passionate about supplying direct to his customers, and trying to keep the supply chain as short as possible.
The Nicolaou's grow their avocados with soil and tree health as their primary focus, with the use of rock based mineral fertilizers and the addition of beneficial soil microbes. They have found that yield, quality and taste follows through from these practices.
Ripening your avocados
These avocados are picked the day before delivery to Dirty Clean Food, so it will take approximately 8-10 days at room temperature to ripen them - simply place them in your fruit bowl at room temperature in the shade.
Commercially, avocados are placed in ripening rooms with ethylene gas to shorten the ripening period. As we do not do this, ripening them will take some patience.
Once the avocado skin colour has changed from light to deep green, place it in the palm of your hand and squeeze gently - the fruit should be soft yet firm.
We DO NOT recommend refrigerating ripe avocados as the flavour and texture can spoil.
NOTE: Avocados do not ripen until they are picked from the tree, and they will also not ripen under refrigeration. If you are storing your avocados in the fridge before ripening, store at at 5 - 7 degrees.
